Canon Elevates Print Quality Assurance with New Inspection Unit for its imagePRESS V Series

Dublin, Republic of Ireland, 11th February 2026 – Canon, a leader in digital printing solutions, today announces the launch of its new Inspection Unit-C1 module for the imagePRESS V series of production colour digital presses. This accessory delivers enhanced efficiency and new features to optimise the accurate production of variable data content, including barcodes, without the need for a manual review of each printed page. Canon’s Inspection Unit-C1 replaces its previous unit, introduced in 2021, and sets a higher standard for efficiency and output integrity in digital printing. Including features such as barcode reading, data matching, and text recognition, as well as automatically detecting dust, stains, streaks, and other imperfections with adjustable precision levels, the new inspection unit ensures exceptional print quality throughout a job.

The new Inspection Unit-C1 module for the Canon imagePRESS V series of production colour digital presses helps to optimise the accurate production of variable data content, including barcodes, without requiring a manual review of each printed page

When a defect is detected, the system automatically purges the affected sheet(s) and performs recovery printing, completing the job without additional input. This automation enables consistent, high-precision inspection while reducing operator workload and improving overall production efficiency.

The Inspection Unit-C1 adds advanced capabilities to the imagePRESS V series, including barcode reading, data matching and text recognition to address a wide range of printing requirements. By leveraging Auto Reference Data (ARD) inspection, which uses the print’s RIP data as the reference image, the process becomes seamless, enhancing reliability, accuracy and productivity for print service providers.

As the use of variable data in digital printing continues to expand, verifying elements such as barcodes and personalised recipient information through visual inspection alone has become increasingly challenging. Manual quality checks demand skilled operators and significant time, making the process costly and prone to human error. The need for automated, high-precision inspection has never been greater to ensure accuracy and consistency in every print job.

The Inspection Unit-C1 meets this need by ensuring reliable variable printing, even for information impossible to inspect visually. Equipped with intelligent functions that reference the actual content of printed materials, the system supports a broad range of variable printing applications. For jobs containing data such as barcodes that cannot be visually verified, the module automatically reads and validates each code against pre-registered CSV data. In double-sided applications, it can also read text in specified areas on both sides and confirm accuracy, helping to prevent layout-related misprints. This intelligent automation delivers outstanding precision and reliability, which can be particularly valuable for confidential or personalised documents, enhancing both quality assurance and customer confidence.

Additionally, the Inspection Unit-C1 supports colour fluctuation inspection at designated points within the print data. The system automatically detects colour variations during production and initiates purge and recovery operations as needed. This function is especially valuable for applications that require strict colour management, such as corporate logos, marketing materials and product catalogues, helping to produce stable, high-quality print.

The unit also strengthens quality assurance with comprehensive reporting features. Inspection results can be easily exported in PDF or CSV format. The PDF reports include detailed inspection summaries and images, allowing them to serve directly as inspection records for customers.

Workflow consultants of Canon or its authorised partners will work with customers to evaluate the optimum use and implementation of the new Inspection Unit to suit their individual needs.

The Inspection Unit-C1 is available for demonstration at the Canon Customer Experience Centre in Venlo, The Netherlands, and is now available to order.
