Canon enhances VR content production workflows with new VR software

United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, 22 December 2022 – Canon Europe today announces an update for its EOS VR SYSTEM in response to user feedback. A software update – version 1.2 – significantly improves performance and functionality, while maintaining the ease-of-use. Both the EOS VR Utility and EOS VR Plug-in for Adobe Premier Pro have been updated to improve efficiency in the post-production workflow, and more significantly EOS VR Utility now supports the conversion of compatible RAW files at up to 60P, supporting more creators in how they want to shoot.

Enhanced functionality and performance

Providing the same simple and intuitive user interface as the initial software, EOS VR Utility features a new RAW movie support function/tab. This update enables creators to work with and make adjustments to compatible RAW files, even at the higher frame rate of 8K/60p, such as those from the EOS R5 C. The combination of 60fps, 8K and the high dynamic range of the RAW file guarantees exceptional image quality and smooth moving images. To make it easier for VR content creators to work with such large VR files, both EOS VR Utility and the EOS VR Plug-in support compatible GPUs (graphics cards) for improved processing and conversion times, speeding up the post-production workflow. In addition to these enhancements, Apple silicon is now natively supported, enabling users to realise the full benefit of the latest Apple processors to further speed up workflows on Mac devices. The EOS VR Plug-in also has the added benefit of a speed priority mode, whereby the creator can apply the VR conversion after editing to shorten post-production time.

Greater freedom of choice

The v1.2 software also gives VR content creators more flexibility and a range of tools to support their workflows. A newly added high quality HEVC 4:4:4 10-bit file format option on the Windows EOS VR Utility software gives more options for codecs when exporting content, while a much-requested lens mask function (Windows and Mac) eliminates the neighbouring lens view, while also feathering the edges of the frame, taking out another step in the final edit.
