At a time when digitisation is a leading priority for European businesses, it is surprising that the continent is suffering from such a crippling digital skills gap. There are far too few European IT graduates and, as technology develops, the gulf is growing. Currently, two fifths of the European Union workforce have little, or zero, digital skills, according to the European Parliament*. Amid high levels of unemployment, the possibility that 500,000 European IT jobs will be unfilled by 2020 is looming. The failure to satisfy this growth area is placing significant pressure on HR professionals across the continent. However, it is also threatening to slow the progress being forged by digital transformation among European businesses; and this would be very destructive to overall growth.
