Business – Responsible business

In pursuing responsible business, we aim to create wider economic value that benefits a broad variety of stakeholder and other groups. We achieve this by offering products, services and solutions that, for example, help businesses stay competitive; that improve individual health in communities; and that improve lifestyles for customers and enrich society.

From cameras to multifunction devices, from broadcast cameras to digital radiography, from semiconductors to scanners, from production printers and large format printers to consultancy services, from binoculars to calculators. Read more about our products for home, healthcare, business products, services and solutions.

Our Kyosei philosophy means we take seriously our responsibility to contribute to a healthy economy that adds value to everyone. Our business success helps support local and regional economies, creating value for customers and other stakeholders such as suppliers, employees and governments.

Picture_banner_BusinessWe have robust policies and procedures that help us comply with applicable laws and regulations, so meeting the expectations of our stakeholders. However, responsible business for us is more than legislative compliance; it also applies to how we expect our employees to act in the workplace; how they are treated; and the actions we take to do business fairly and safely, protecting our customers and the environment and demonstrating best practice.

As a subsidiary of Canon Inc., our parent company, we play our part in the internal governance process, taking part in the Expanded Ethics Committee meeting, which makes decisions on measures to support compliance. We include compliance within corporate governance, alongside ethical trading, laws and regulations, economic impacts, employer and employee responsibilities and product safety.

Compliance and Actions

We comply with the relevant laws and regulations in the many countries where we operate. We take part in industry associations and groups to consider aspects of environmental regulation and product safety, aiming to stay ahead of legislative developments and actively seeking opportunities to participate in their creation. Memberships include DIGITALEUROPE, EuroVAprint, Japan Business Council in Europe (JBCE), COCIR and CSR Europe.

Our internal compliance assessment group ensures we understand and consider the impacts of new legislation and regulations affecting our business before they are enacted so we can plan appropriate action. We actively engage employees to help us do business fairly and responsibly. We have strong business policies to safeguard our customers and employees and to meet stakeholder economic expectations. We have achieved certification to a number of international ISO standards. Find out more about our workplace policies.

Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive

Canon complies with the European Union (EU) Directive (2012/19/EU) on waste electrical and electronic equipment that aims to reduce the impact of waste electronics on the environment. The WEEE Directive is part of the law in each EU member state. Find out more about Canon and the WEEE Directive.

REACH Regulation

The REACH Regulation EC No 1907/2006 enforces a review of the properties of chemicals to identify potential human health and environmental risks. Canon works closely with its supply chain to ensure continuous compliance with the REACH Regulation. Find out more about Canon and the REACH Regulation. Read more about Canon’s green procurement programme.

Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS)

Canon complies with the EU RoHS Directive (2011/65/EU) and, in some cases, exceeds its requirements. For example, our imageRUNNER ADVANCE C5000 series of multifunctional printers and the (standard) lens of our EOS 550D DSLR camera are all lead free, beyond RoHS requirements.

The RoHS Directive aims to minimise the environmental impact of waste electrical and electronic equipment at the end of its life by reducing the legal quantities of six substances that the equipment may contain. Products sold in the European Union may not currently contain more than specified amounts of lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE). Find out more about waste electrical and electronic equipment.

Batteries and Accumulators Directive

As a producer or importer of batteries, we are members of recycling systems for waste batteries and accumulators in each European Union (EU) member state where we operate. We meet our obligations to report and finance battery collection and treatment. The EU Batteries Directive (2006/66/EC) aims to reduce the environmental impact of batteries and accumulators and to increase the recycling of waste batteries and accumulators.

Some of our calculators are designed to work solely on solar power, so they don’t need a battery at all, or on dual solar/battery power to save energy. Find out more about our energy saving calculator range and how to recycle your batteries.

Packaging Directive

Canon participates in packaging recycling schemes and helps finance the collection and recycling of packaging waste. This is in line with the European Union Directive on Packaging and Packaging Waste (94/62/EC) and local regulations in the countries where we have national sales organisations. We also continue to make reductions in the amount of product packaging required.

Code of conduct

Code of conduct
All Canon employees have to comply with our group-wide Code of Conduct. This provides a framework for us to meet legal and ethical business obligations. It sets out standards for responsible behaviour by employees in areas ranging from protecting confidential information to prohibiting improper conduct. This is reinforced with additional workplace policies across EMEA.

 Top

ISO 14001

Canon has achieved global certification to the rigorous ISO 14001 environmental management standard since 2007 and aims for continuous improvement at all its sites. Around 200 sites in 25 countries across EMEA are currently certified. Going forward, in line with the Océ integration process, relevant sites will be brought under Canon’s global certificate.

Green procurement

We started our green procurement programme in EMEA in 2008 to ensure we source safe materials and components. Suppliers are asked to check that they comply with relevant regulations and to monitor their own suppliers as well. Regulations range from hazardous chemicals to timber.

We audit our suppliers based on a risk assessment. We update our supplier questionnaire in line with changes to relevant regulations. New suppliers must complete a full questionnaire and may qualify for an audit; current suppliers are asked to confirm they comply with any amended regulations.

We work with suppliers on any areas requiring improvement. This helps us make sure that parts and products we purchase comply with all relevant European Union legislation, as well as Canon’s global green procurement programme, so customers are protected from hazardous chemicals. Find out more on Canon’s global green procurement programme.

Patents

We file an increasing number of patents in EMEA every year, safeguarding our new products and developments. These include hardware and software; consumables; optical products; medical devices; and printing and scanning management software. With our business expanding through acquisition and in new markets, there is an increasing need to protect inventions and developments originating in EMEA and we are taking steps to meet these challenges.

Anti-counterfeit

We work strenuously to root out counterfeit products, working with police, customs and other government agencies. This helps protect our brand and reputation and safeguards our customers. Most fakes or copies will not work properly, or as well as genuine products, and could actually harm consumers. Fakes are also unlikely to comply with environmental laws such as WEEE and REACH. Read more about our anti-counterfeit initiatives.
